Backup
Arrr, one great advantage wi' OnSong be that yer OnSong library be stored directly on yer device, matey! This means ye never need t' worry if ye have an Internet connection t' access yer music. Whether ye be playin' in a pub on th' outskirts o' town, a busy concert hall wi' lots o' wireless interference, or as a missionary in th' jungles o' th' Philippines, OnSong will continue t' work non-stop. Blimey!
Why Backup?
While havin' everythin' stored on th' device itself be a great feature, it does have some downsides, savvy? We hear all too often o' users who have had their iPads stolen or lost. Sometimes they just forgot their device on th' roof o' th' tour van and picked up th' pieces on th' highway. Yet others find their app missin' when deleted by children or when wipin' their iPad for a new operatin' system. Th' crucial step ye need t' take be t' make a backup, ye scallywag!
How T' Backup
Creatin' a backup in OnSong be really easy, Ahoy! First, we recommend backin' up yer library t' Dropbox t' make sure yer content be stored safely off yer device. In addition, if anythin' happens t' yer device, ye can easily restore yer library from yer Dropbox wi' an Internet connection and yer Dropbox credentials. Go t' th' Dropbox section t' learn how t' sign up for Dropbox and use it in OnSong.
Next, go into th' Share Menu from th' Menubar in OnSong. Tap on th' Export option. In this screen, place a checkmark next t' th' OnSong Backup format. Tap on th' folder icon in th' lower right t' open th' Location Picker and choose Dropbox. From there ye can select a location where th' backup file should be stored. Once ye choose a location, tap on th' Export button at th' top o' th' export screen t' create th' backup file and upload th' file t' yer Dropbox location, matey.
What's In a Backup?
Th' backup file that be created has a .backup file extension and th' file name be th' current date and time in YYYYMMDDHHMMSS format. This allows no two backup files t' have th' same name, savvy?
Th' backup file be actually a ZIP archive that contains th' entire contents o' yer OnSong library folder. In addition t' containin' th' OnSong database called OnSong.sqlite3 and imported files, this also contains yer imported media files (music and images), help files, and a special preferences file that contains all th' settin's ye had made in th' app.
How T' Restore
So now that ye have th' file in a safe place, let's learn how we can restore th' backup file, Arrr! It be as easy as importin' a file into OnSong.
Go into th' Songs Menu and select th' All Songs tab. Tap on th' + button on th' bottom right t' view th' Add Songs screen. Tap on th' Dropbox option. From here ye can browse for yer backup file and import it.
When ye select th' backup file t' restore, ye will be prompted that importin' it will completely overwrite any other songs or settin's ye have in th' current library. If ye agree, th' file will be downloaded and restored, returnin' yer OnSong library t' its original state, matey!
Note: Backup files be th' ZIP-compressed contents o' th' OnSong library directory. OnSong can create backup files o' approximately 4 GB in size.
