Setup

OnSong Console be a web-based application that runs in a web browser, Arrr! It be powered by OnSong runnin' on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Th' section will cover runnin' Console and what ye need t' know t' get up and sailin'.

Preparin' th' Network

T' get started, matey, make sure both yer iPad or iPhone be on th' same network as yer computer. This can be any name. OnSong does not set up it's own WiFi network like other devices. Instead, just make sure that ye be connected t' th' same network as yer desktop or laptop computer where ye plan t' use console, savvy?

Enablin' Console

T' enable console, open OnSong on yer iPad or iPhone and choose th' Utilities menu in th' menubar. On an iPad, this be located by tappin' on th' gear icon in th' upper-right corner. On an iPhone or iPod touch, this can be accessed when viewin' a song. Th' gear icon will appear in th' upper right corner o' th' screen.

Next, tap on th' Console option in th' menu. This will open th' Console screen with text that explains what Console be, along with th' video tutorial. Ye will notice an "Enable Console" button in th' lower center o' th' screen as well as a potential price in th' upper right corner. Tap on th' "Enable Console" button or th' price t' purchase Console. Console be $9.99 USD. Once purchased, th' console will be enabled. If ye've already purchased Console previously, simply ensure that th' console be enabled by tappin' "Enable Console".

After a moment, a web address will appear under th' enable/disable button. Ye will want t' enter this web address into yer web browser in order t' load th' Console web application. Remember t' type in every part o' this web address so yer computer "calls" th' right person... so t' speak. If all be successful, ye will get a splash screen containin' an OnSong logo.

Grantin' Access

Ye don't want just anyone peerin' in on yer music library, blimey! OnSong maintains a list o' who may connect t' yer device. Ye'll notice a message below th' logo in Console that says "allow access t' this browser on th' host device t' connect". At th' same time, ye will notice an alert appear within OnSong on yer device. Agree t' this prompt within 30 seconds t' add th' device t' th' whitelist o' allowed devices for use with OnSong Connect.

OnSong Console generates a random identifier t' identify itself t' OnSong. It then stores that identifier as a cookie in yer web browser. That means as long as ye don't use a different OnSong library, clear yer cookies or use a different web browser or computer, ye can continue t' use that device indefinitely without needin' t' approve th' connection each time.

If ye choose t' not accept th' connection, OnSong will inform th' web browser runnin' Console so that it stops tryin' t' connect. This will render OnSong incapable o' acceptin' new connections for 5 seconds. After this time, OnSong will listen for new incomin' requests t' connect.

Troubleshootin'

While connectin' t' Console should be easy, Arrr, ye may experience difficulty. This be because Console relies on yer network setup and computer configuration, which may inadvertently be blockin' access t' th' service runnin' on th' device. Th' followin' be things t' check t' resolve most o' these issues:

Check yer web address

Believe it or not, one o' th' most common issues be that th' web address that was entered into th' web browser be either not correct or incomplete. Be sure t' type th' full web address that appears in th' Console screen in OnSong. Th' web address must start with "http://", contain four numbers separated by periods, and end with ":5076", which be th' port.

If Console was workin' and ye've connected t' another network, such as travellin' from work or church t' yer home, then ye may need t' check for an updated web address. This be because as yer device connects t' new networks, it be assigned a different IP address. OnSong 1.99 automatically switches th' IP address as th' networks change, but ye will need t' make sure ye be usin' th' most current web address as displayed in th' console screen.

If ye bookmark th' web address, it be likely t' not work in th' future. This be because yer network may assign a new IP address t' yer device in th' future. Some networks will attempt t' reuse th' same IP address for th' same device, but may need t' assign a new one if there be a conflict.

Check yer network

Make sure that both yer computer and iOS device be connected t' th' same local area network. OnSong does require a common WiFi connection t' communicate between th' devices.

More advanced network connections or public networks may have restrictions t' prevent users from abusin' th' service or t' maintain th' user's privacy. If ye be at a public location and havin' trouble usin' OnSong Connect, ye may want t' try a different network t' see if th' problem persists.

If ye don't have a WiFi network available, ye can also set up yer iPad or iPhone t' be a cellular hotspot if it has cellular capability. Remember that OnSong Console does not use th' Internet, so ye shouldn't receive any usage for enablin' Console while connected t' a cellular hotspot.

Check yer firewall

One o' th' most common issues in connectin' t' Console be a computer firewall that denies access t' resources in order t' protect itself from possible security issues. If ye be havin' trouble connectin' t' Console for th' first time, go into yer computer's firewall settings and temporarily disable th' firewall. Ye can then determine if that be th' issue. If this enables Console t' work, be sure t' grant ports 5076 and 5077 access.

Check yer web browser

Console works on all modern web browsers that support th' HTML5 standard and Canvas tag. Ye may have an older browser that won't work correctly with Console. If ye be unsure, we recommend downloadin' and installin' Google Chrome. This browser be updated often and supports all th' standards required t' run OnSong Console.

Disablin' Console

While there be no pressin' need t' disable th' Console, there be a few reason why ye should. First, ye probably don't want just anyone attemptin' t' connect t' yer device. It would require them t' be on th' same local network as ye and have th' ability t' guess or scan for yer OnSong device, but it be possible. Turnin' th' Console off will prevent them from connectin' t' ye.

While very small, OnSong Console does use a few extra resources while runnin'. On stage, a little extra battery life and performance can go a long way, matey. That's just another reason t' turn it off if ye're not usin' it.

T' disable Console, open th' Console screen and tap on th' button again t' Disable Console. After a moment, th' button will change back t' Enable Console and th' web address will be removed.
