Connecting MIDI
Apple Camera Connection Kit
If you're looking to connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to a MIDI device over USB, you'll need an Apple-branded Camera Connection Kit. This turns the port on your iOS device into a USB port. These are typically used by USB storage like thumb drives and may not output enough current to power MIDI keyboards. If this is the case, you'll need to power the keyboard separately, or use a powered USB hub.
Choose a Camera Connection Kit from one of the options below that match the port on your iOS device:
-
Lightning Port to USB
Lightning is the small, reversible port that is used on most iOS devices from the fourth generation iPad to modern devices. This will not work on iPad Pro devices that use USB-C ports.
-
Lightning Port to USB 3 (powered)
This adapter is the same as the above, but has an additional Lighting port which allows you to charge your device while using the USB port. This will only charge your device, not provide more port to the MIDI device.
-
USB-C to USB
If you're using a newer iPad Pro with a USB-C port, you'll need a USB-C to USB adapter like this.
-
USB-C Multiport Adapter
If you're looking to do more with your iPad Pro like charge and output HDMI video, get this adapter instead.
